Mohammadwadi, 10th September 2025: In a significant stride toward proactive policing and community safety, Pune City Police, in coordination with the Mohammadwadi-Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation (MURWDF), has initiated a reconnaissance survey for installing AI-enabled CCTV cameras in key locations across Mohammadwadi, Undri, and NIBM Annexe. The survey was conducted under the guidance of ACP (IT) Vivek Pawa, with technical execution by Allied Digital Services, the official contractor under the Pune Safe City project.

A total of 12 high-priority locations were identified during the visit based on local inputs and risk assessments. These include blind turns, school routes, parks, and internal roads that see frequent accidents, suspicious vehicles, and unsafe late-night activity. The camera network aims to bolster real-time monitoring, traffic regulation, and law enforcement response in an area that has witnessed rapid urbanization but lags in basic civic infrastructure like street lighting and footpaths.

“We wholeheartedly welcome Pune City Police’s initiative to survey and set up AI-enabled CCTV surveillance in Mohammadwadi, Undri, and NIBM Annexe. This step marks a new chapter in community safety, ensuring that miscreants think twice before committing crimes, knowing that ‘Big Daddy is always watching.’ Incidents like bag snatching and late-night robberies have troubled residents in the past, but with this technology, we are confident such threats will be curbed effectively. We sincerely thank ACP Vivek Pawar and his team for their proactive approach in prioritizing the safety and peace of our neighborhoods,” said Sunil Koloti, member of MURWDF.

“Today, our area was visited by the CCTV installation team—a long-pending need. Due to the heavy traffic flow and the presence of DPS School nearby, it’s absolutely essential that surveillance be installed for the safety of children and residents alike. I greatly appreciate the team for giving us time to review the sites and understand our concerns,” said Deepa Cheema, MURWDF member.

Gayatri Dubey, Secretary of Nyati Enclave, added, “To reiterate, the narrowing road along the community garden at the blind turn is a cause of concern for us, as it often attracts unknown parked vehicles. Hence, we request that a camera be placed overlooking the park wall to keep the children returning from school and the elderly that walk on the road safe.”

Speaking on behalf of the larger citizen perspective, MURWDF Director Sunil Aiyer emphasized, “We thank CP Pune and ACP Vivek Pawar for the initiative in considering the installation of AI CCTV cameras in the NIBM Annexe–Undri–Mohammadwadi belt. Since much of this area only came under PMC jurisdiction in 2017, urban infrastructure hasn’t kept pace with population growth. A ‘floating population’ of temporary labor has raised safety concerns, especially in areas without proper roads and lighting. This CCTV initiative is a much-needed intervention, and we hope it results in action and not just lip service.”

This collaborative effort aligns with the broader Safe City Mission recently reinforced by Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, who announced the installation of 2,886 new CCTV cameras citywide by 2025, supported by a ₹438.22 crore budget. Of these, 609 cameras are designated for hill and ghat sections, including remote areas like Bopdev Ghat, under a separate ₹82 crore budget. Significantly, the new deployment includes high-growth suburbs like Mohammadwadi, Undri, NIBM Road, and Kondhwa—areas that face mounting pressure from traffic, safety risks, and insufficient civic infrastructure.

The enhanced surveillance grid will span main roads, internal lanes, chowks, traffic circles, and residential colonies, enabling AI-based detection of suspicious activity, vehicle violations, and crowd patterns. The entire network will be integrated with Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) to support seamless coordination between police, municipal authorities, and emergency services.

This citizen-led push, paired with police commitment, demonstrates that true urban safety emerges from partnership—where residents become eyes and ears on the ground, and technology becomes the enabler for fast, smart, and responsive policing.
