Viman Nagar, 13th September 2025: A 33-year-old software professional from Mahalunge sustained serious injuries after being attacked with a billhook by two men outside Amar Tech Centre on Airport Road, Viman Nagar, in the early hours of Thursday.

Police said the victim, originally from West Bengal, had gone to pick up his fiancée— who works with an IT firm in Amar Tech Centre—around 3 am when the assault took place. The attack left him with a fractured right hand and injuries to his back and head. The incident, captured on CCTV, quickly spread across social media platforms.

A case has been registered at the Yerawada Police Station under sections 118(2) (grievous hurt by dangerous weapon), 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act.

Swift Arrests
Police Sub-inspector Mahesh Lamkhade, who is investigating the case, said both accused were arrested within six hours. “The men seen in the video were tracked down to Hadapsar and taken into custody. They were produced in court on Friday and have been remanded in police custody till September 15,” he said.

The arrested youths have been identified as Balaji Shivaji Munde and Siddharth Ishwar Daliya, both 19, residents of Hadapsar. Police said Munde has a criminal history, with two earlier cases of assault registered against him at Hadapsar and Kalepadal police stations, while Daliya had no previous record.

Lamkhade added that the victim’s life was spared because the assailants did not strike with the sharp edge of the weapon. “He was fortunate that the blunt side was used. After treatment, he has been discharged from the hospital,” the officer said.

The Motive
Investigations revealed that the assault was planned at the behest of a cab driver who suspected that an IT employee was involved in a relationship with his female friend. The accused waited near the IT firm but, when the intended target failed to appear, attacked another employee in frustration.

Police said the victim, who works in Hinjawadi, had a routine of picking up his fiancée after work before heading home. His fiancée and the cab driver’s female friend work at the same company but are not acquainted with each other.

The assailants were riding a two-wheeler without a registration plate, which has been seized. “We tracked their movements through multiple CCTV cameras. During questioning, Munde initially gave us a fake name, but his identity was later confirmed,” a senior officer said.

Background of the Accused
According to Yerawada police, Munde’s family had earlier sent him back to their native Dharashiv district due to his criminal activities. However, he returned without informing them and soon became involved in this crime.

Family’s Reaction
Speaking to police, the victim’s fiancée said the couple was still shaken by the incident. “We had just got engaged and were preparing for our wedding in February. This attack was completely unexpected. My fiancé has suffered serious injuries, and the trauma will take time to heal,” she said.
