Pune: 30 Set for MJ Cup Hockey, Tournament to be Played in 3 Categories from 10th October
Pune, 19th September 2025: Thirty teams drawn in three categories will be seen in action in the 4th MJ Cup Hockey tournament at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium, Nehrunagar-Pimpri from 10th October.
This prize money tournament will witness action among twelve senior teams, including six from Pune and 6 invitees, a separate tournament for eight Pune teams from the junior section and lastly six women’s teams. The seniors section includes teams like last year’s winners Krida Prabodhini, runners-up GST Customs and third and fourth placed Central Railway and PCMC Academy respectively.
The tournament will be played on a league cum knock out basis in all three sections (seniors, juniors, women) and will carry a total cash prize of one lakh. The seniors’ winner will stand to gain 20,000 the runners up 15,000 and third place 10,000.
Likewise, the top-3 in the junior section will receive Rs.15,000, Rs.10,000 and Rs.5,000 respectively. The women’s section will receive Rs.20,000 for the winners, the runners up will gain Rs.15,000 and the third place Rs.10,000 . The women’s section includes winners PCMC and runners up KP Balewadi while Mumbai Republican who finished third include themselves among the entries.
Speaking about the tournament, Edwin Moti, founder Excellency Academy, the organisers, said “initially the seniors will be divided into four groups of three teams each with the top two teams from the league stage moving into the knockouts – the quarterfinals.
The juniors will have 2 groups of five teams each, with four teams moving into the knockouts. The women’s section will have six teams placed with -each team in the top-4 teams making it into the semi-finals knockouts. The juniors will be played for the first time in its three year history.
The tournament is being held under the aegis of Hockey Maharashtra and Hockey Pune and carries trophies for all sections and mementoes apart from cash awards.
The other prizes include Best Goalkeeper, Best Forward, Best Half and Best Defender for all three sections.
The finals have been set for 18th October.
