Two Pune Men Sentenced to 15 Days Jail and Fined for Drunk Driving

Pune, 22nd September 2025: In a stern message against drunk driving, the Motor Vehicle Court in Shivajinagar sentenced two drivers to imprisonment and fines on Monday after they were found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol.

In the first case, Judge S. B. Patil sentenced 29-year-old Rohit Shailendra Verma, a resident of Vidyanagar, Pimple Gurav, to 15 days of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 12,000. The case was registered by Pune City Traffic Police under Case No. 4979/2024, filed under Sections 184, 185, and 3/181 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

In a separate case, the same court sentenced 31-year-old Rajkumar Mangini Kulal, a resident of Nanded City, Pune, to 15 days of simple imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000. His case (01/2025) was also registered by the Traffic Department under Sections 184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

According to official data, Pune City has witnessed a worrying surge in drunk driving cases in recent years. A total of 2,017 cases were registered in 2020, 69 in 2021, 37 in 2022, 562 in 2023, and 5,293 in 2024. In the current year, 3,948 cases have already been filed, informed DCP (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav.

The prosecution in both cases was handled by Police Prosecutor Varsha Rani Jadhav, with Police Inspector Runal Mulla and PSI Vikas Patil overseeing the proceedings.
