Pune: Wakad–Hinjawadi Bridge to Operate as One-Way During Peak Hours, Entry-Exit Changes on Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway

Wakad, 25th September 2025: In a bid to ease chronic congestion in one of Pune’s busiest IT corridors, Pimpri-Chinchwad traffic authorities have introduced experimental changes on the Wakad–Hinjawadi Bridge and along the Katraj–Dehu Road Bypass of the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway.

Under the new system, the Wakad–Hinjawadi Bridge will function as a one-way bridge during peak office hours, with lane distribution reversed according to the direction of traffic flow. Additionally, entry and exit points on the bypass near Wakad and Hinjawadi have been altered to streamline vehicle movement.

The changes follow a visit on Tuesday by Pimpri-Chinchwad Commissioner of Police Vinoy Kumar Choubey, who inspected traffic bottlenecks, interacted with residents, and heard grievances raised by the Unclog Hinjawadi group led by petitioners Sachin Londhe and Sachin Gunale.

Explaining the trial plan, Police Inspector Rahul Sonawane, in charge of the Hinjawadi Traffic Division, said, “On a pilot basis, the bridge will be one-way from Wakad to Hinjawadi in the morning hours, with three lanes dedicated to incoming traffic and one for vehicles returning towards Wakad. In the evenings, the system will be reversed, as the majority of vehicles leave Hinjawadi during that time.”

He further clarified, “Motorists traveling against the flow during peak hours will be diverted to nearby underpasses for U-turns — the Sayaji Underpass in the morning and the Surya Underpass in the evening.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vivek Patil said the adjustments also extend to the bypass highway. “We have restructured entry and exit points so that in one area, vehicles either enter or exit, not both. Temporary barricades and signage have been installed to guide motorists,” he explained.

DCP Patil emphasized that the move is temporary and open to public feedback. “This is an experimental arrangement. Citizens can share their suggestions or objections with the Hinjawadi Traffic Division office at Bhujbal Chowk or at our main Traffic Branch office in Chinchwad Gaon near Elpro Mall.”
