Two Tenders in Six Months: Questions Raised Over PMC’s Rs 31 Lakh Road Repair in Pune
Pune, 14th October 2025: The road from Khadi Machine Chowk to Yewalewadi, which is part of the upcoming Pune Grand Challenge international cycle competition route, has come under scrutiny after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) floated a second tender for repair work worth Rs 31 lakh — just months after the same stretch was asphalted.
The 75-kilometre cycling route will cover roads across Pune city, the district, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The PMC has issued tenders worth Rs 145 crore for developing and repairing these roads, with work expected to be completed by the end of November.
However, the inclusion of the Khadi Machine Chowk–Yewalewadi road in the competition route has sparked questions about financial prudence and quality control. The road was asphalted only a few months ago, and at that time, minor repairs to the divider were noted. Now, the municipal corporation’s road department has issued a new tender for painting, divider repair, and pedestrian walkway maintenance — barely six months later.
According to officials, Rs 31 lakh will be spent under the new tender. Interestingly, this comes after the administration had earlier prepared a preliminary estimate of about Rs 57 lakh for the same stretch. Both tenders have been floated at a rate 47 percent below the estimated cost.
The contractor has offered to carry out the work at this discounted rate, raising concerns among residents and civic observers about whether the quality of materials and execution will meet acceptable standards.
With two tenders floated for the same road within a short period, questions are now being raised about the transparency of the process and whether repeated spending on recently completed projects is justified, especially in the run-up to the international cycling event.
