Pune: Teen Girl in Koregaon Park Dies by Suicide After Alleged Online Harassment
Koregaon Park, 27th November 2025: A 16-year-old girl from Koregaon Park tragically ended her life after allegedly being harassed and blackmailed by a man she had befriended online. The Koregaon Park police are now searching for the suspect, a man in his early 20s from Belagavi, Karnataka, who allegedly pressured the girl and her family for Rs 50,000 under threat of sharing her photographs on social media.
The incident came to light on November 23, when the girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her home using her dupatta while her family was away. Her father and brother work for a private company, while her mother is employed as domestic help. Distressed by the circumstances, the mother lodged a complaint with the Koregaon Park police, identifying the suspect by his first name and accusing him of abetting her daughter’s death.
Police Inspector Sangita Jadhav said, “We have identified the suspect based on call records and the phone number he used to contact the girl and her family. He is in his early 20s, and we hope to take him into custody soon.”
According to the police, the girl’s family originally hails from Belagavi and had moved to Pune several years ago. She was a Std X student at a local school. Preliminary investigations suggest that the girl first met the man during a family visit to Belagavi at a social function. The two later connected through a social media platform and began chatting regularly.
Inspector Jadhav added, “The suspect is reported to have visited Pune, and the girl’s mother believes he took her daughter to a lodge, where photographs were allegedly taken in compromising positions. He then started blackmailing her for money, demanding Rs 50,000 in exchange for not sharing the images online.”
She further explained, “When the girl informed him she could not pay, he extended his harassment to her mother and brother, who also refused to comply with his demands. Distressed and under constant pressure, the girl took this extreme step on Sunday afternoon while her family was away.”
Police have recovered the girl’s phone for examination. “Once the suspect is apprehended, we will secure his phone as well to trace the origin of the photographs and understand how he persuaded the girl to meet him in person,” said Inspector Jadhav.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on both the online and in-person interactions that led to this tragic incident.
