Mumbai, 9th February 2026: The Maharashtra government will soon begin a large-scale recruitment drive to fill nearly 70,000 vacant posts across state departments under a new and reformed hiring system, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Monday.

Of the total vacancies, around 50,000 posts will be filled through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), while nearly 20,000 posts will be recruited outside the MPSC framework. The chief minister said the new recruitment process will be based on job-specific skills, eligibility, service entry rules, and the nature of work.

Fadnavis was speaking at a high-level meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai to review reforms in the state’s service entry rules. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, along with additional chief secretaries, principal secretaries, and senior officials from all departments.

The chief minister said the government is prioritising comprehensive administrative reforms, with a strong focus on manpower management and transparency in recruitment. A formal decision on revising the service entry rules will be taken soon in a cabinet meeting, he added.

Fadnavis emphasised that the General Administration Department is not merely a procedural body but a crucial pillar of the state’s entire recruitment system. Filling 70,000 vacancies, he said, will significantly improve the efficiency and performance of various government departments.

He also noted that Maharashtra’s manpower management model had received the highest praise at the Chief Ministers’ Conference held in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister had urged other states to adopt similar governance reform models, making Maharashtra a national benchmark in administrative reforms.

To reduce paperwork, long queues, and delays in the recruitment process, Fadnavis directed officials to develop an online and digital verification system. He said that if sensitive documents like passports can be verified digitally, the same model should be applied across other recruitment processes.

Each department has been instructed to integrate certificate verification with DigiLocker and explore blockchain-based systems to ensure transparency. The chief minister stressed that the recruitment process must be free from doubt, bias, or injustice, and should inspire confidence among youth.

“Within the next year, Maharashtra will establish a new governance reform model. Every department has a key role to play in making administrative reforms successful,” Fadnavis said.
