Mumbai, 5th March 2026: India defeated England in the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, securing a place in the tournament final after a high-scoring contest. The victory was built on a sensational knock by Sanju Samson and crucial wickets from Axar Patel, which ensured India stayed ahead throughout the match.
Batting first, India produced a strong performance and posted an impressive 253/7 in 20 overs, one of the highest totals of the tournament. The highlight of the innings was Samson’s brilliant 89-run knock, in which the wicketkeeper-batter combined elegance with aggression. He attacked the English bowlers from the very beginning, finding boundaries with ease.
Samson also built important partnerships that helped India maintain a steady run-scoring rate throughout the innings. Although he was dismissed before the end of the innings, India continued their aggressive approach in the final overs, with quick runs coming from the middle and lower order. The late surge helped India cross the 250-run mark, putting England under significant pressure in the semi-final.
In reply, England attempted to keep up with the required run rate and showed positive intent during the early overs of the chase. However, India’s bowlers ensured that the pressure remained on the opposition. Axar Patel played a key role with the ball, picking up crucial wickets and breaking important partnerships during the middle overs.
As the required run rate continued to climb, England’s chances of victory gradually faded. The turning point came late in the innings when Jacob Bethell was run out while attempting a desperate second run, effectively ending England’s hopes of a dramatic comeback. India’s bowlers and fielders maintained their composure in the closing stages to seal a comfortable victory.
With this win, India has advanced to the final with strong momentum and confidence. The team will now face the final challenge in Ahmedabad on March 8, 2026.
