No Opening Ceremony for IPL 2026 as BCCI Cancels Event to Pay Tribute to June 4 Stampede Victims
New Delhi, 26th March 2026: Fans gearing up for the spectacle of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 will miss the customary glitz and glamour this year, as the BCCI has decided to cancel the opening ceremony of the tournament.
The 19th edition of the IPL is set to begin on March 28, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Traditionally, the tournament kicks off with a star-studded opening ceremony featuring performances and celebrations, but this time, the curtain will rise without the usual fanfare.
The decision has been taken in the wake of the tragic stampede in Bengaluru on June 4, 2025, following RCB’s maiden IPL title win, which claimed 11 lives. The BCCI said the move is intended as a mark of respect to the victims of the incident.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that no cultural or entertainment programme will be held on the opening day in Bengaluru. “As a tribute to those who lost their lives in the June 4 tragedy, the IPL 2026 will not have an opening ceremony,” he said.
While the opening will be subdued, the board is planning to compensate with a grand closing ceremony. A large-scale entertainment event is being lined up for the final on May 31, bringing the tournament to a celebratory close.
