Pune: PMC Plans Rs 200 Crore Project to Widen Chandani Chowk–Bhugaon Road
Pune, 27th March 2026: In a bid to ease chronic traffic congestion on the busy Chandani Chowk–Bhugaon (up to Ramnadi) road, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to undertake a major infrastructure project involving road widening, flyovers and a grade separator.
The project, estimated to cost around ₹200 crore, has been placed before the standing committee, with a decision expected at Friday’s meeting. The civic administration has planned to allocate funds for the project over the next three years. An initial provision of ₹16 crore was made in the 2025–26 budget, which has been used to appoint a consultant and prepare the project plan.
The project will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 is estimated to cost ₹67.85 crore, while Phase 2 will require ₹135.76 crore. The administration has proposed to mobilise funds under Section 72B.
Currently, several stretches between Chandani Chowk and Bhugaon are as narrow as 10 metres, leading to severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. Considering the increasing number of vehicles and rapid population growth in the area, the road will be widened up to 60 metres.
As part of the project, a 430-metre-long grade separator will be constructed at PVG IT College Chowk, including a 120-metre RCC structure, at an estimated cost of ₹27 crore. In addition, an 870-metre flyover will be built at Ambrosia Chowk and Patil Nagar Chowk, of which 544 metres will be an RCC structure, at a cost of around ₹82 crore.
A new bridge over the Ramnadi river, measuring 30 metres in length and 70 metres in width, is also planned to reduce bottlenecks at the river crossing.
The stretch serves as a key route connecting Pune to the Konkan region and areas such as Pirangut, Roha, Bhagadi and Mangaon, besides providing an alternative access route to Hinjewadi IT Park. With several international educational institutions located in the vicinity and more proposed in the future, traffic volume in the area is expected to increase further.
Officials believe the project will significantly improve traffic flow in western Pune and provide major relief to daily commuters once completed.
