Pune: Jay Pawar May Contest Baramati in 2029 On NCP Ticket, Pawar Family Clash Likely as Yugendra is Also in Race from NCP (SP)
Baramati, 23rd April 2026: Jay Pawar has indicated that he may contest the Baramati Assembly election in 2029, setting the stage for a possible high-profile family contest against his cousin Yugendra Pawar in the Pawar family stronghold.
The remarks came on Wednesday as voting was underway for the Baramati Assembly bypoll, where voters turned out in large numbers. The seat fell vacant following the accidental death of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar earlier this year. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar is contesting the by-election.
Speaking after casting his vote at a Zilla Parishad school in Katewadi, Jay Pawar said there was growing demand from party workers and local residents for him to contest from Baramati in the next Assembly election.
“There is a demand from people that I should be the Baramati candidate in 2029. My expectation is that I continue working as a party worker, but that is what people want,” he said.
Responding to the speculation, Srinivas Pawar, Jay’s uncle said it was too early to say whether the 2029 election would witness a Jay Pawar versus Yugendra Pawar contest.
“There is a wish among party workers that Jay Pawar should contest the 2029 Assembly election. Whether it will be Jay Pawar versus Yugendra Pawar cannot be said now. Their party is different and our party is different. Our current focus is on the Baramati bypoll, and we are confident that Sunetra Pawar will win by a record margin,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rohit Pawar, whose name has also figured in political discussions around Baramati, said he would continue to contest from Karjat-Jamkhed if asked about a future Baramati bid. He also said Jay Pawar’s statement was his personal view.
While the bypoll remains the immediate focus, Jay Pawar’s remarks have already sparked early political buzz over a potential Pawar-versus-Pawar battle in Baramati in 2029.
