From Restaurant Bills to Gifts: Pune IT Couple’s 50-50 Rule Ends in Divorce in 9 Days
Pune, 4th June 2026: An unusual marital dispute centred on the strict sharing of expenses has led to the divorce of an IT professional couple in Pune. The husband reportedly insisted on a “50-50” arrangement in nearly every aspect of married life—from breakfast and restaurant bills to vacations, gifts, and household expenses—eventually resulting in irreconcilable differences and the breakdown of the marriage.
According to details presented before the court, both the husband and wife were employed in the IT sector. However, the husband earned significantly more than the wife. Despite the disparity in their incomes, he allegedly maintained a meticulous record of all family expenses and expected his wife to contribute exactly half of every cost.
The wife stated that whenever they went out for breakfast or dinner, the husband would insist that she pay half the bill. She further alleged that he adopted the same approach for vacations and even expected her to bear half the cost of gifts he purchased for her.
The couple entered into an arranged marriage in May 2023. However, their relationship reportedly began to deteriorate within a few months. Communication between them became increasingly limited, with conversations reportedly taking place only two or three times a week.
The wife also alleged that the husband frequently suspected her of financially supporting her parents, which often led to arguments. According to court submissions, the couple had not shared a marital relationship for more than a year.
Constant disputes over finances, lack of communication, and insufficient time spent together ultimately pushed the couple toward separation. They mutually decided to end their marriage and filed for divorce through advocate Prajakta Taru, assisted by advocates Sagar Giri and Vaishnavi Madale.
Divorce Granted in Just Nine Days
The case was resolved remarkably quickly. The divorce petition was filed on May 13, and the matter was disposed of on May 22—just nine days later.
As both parties were firm in their decision to separate, the court passed its order during the first hearing itself. Notably, the wife reportedly bore the entire cost of the divorce proceedings.
Advocate’s Statement
Advocate Prajakta Taru, who represented the couple, said:
“The husband believed that every expense should be shared equally. However, a balance could not be achieved between financial independence and expectations within the marriage. The resulting conflicts continued to escalate, ultimately leading the couple to seek divorce. Since they had been living separately for more than a year, the matter was resolved swiftly.”
