Pune, 9th June 2026: After a brief one-day pause, the southwest monsoon resumed its advance on Monday, extending its reach across more parts of Maharashtra and further into South Maharashtra.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon has now fully covered the districts of Sindhudurg, Kolhapur and Sangli. It has also advanced over most parts of Ratnagiri and Satara districts and reached the southern parts of Solapur district.

The monsoon had made rapid progress during the first two days following its onset over Kerala. However, its subsequent advance slowed considerably. While it continues to move northward steadily, several regions are yet to come under its full influence.

On Monday, the monsoon also advanced into additional parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and the northeastern states. The IMD said conditions remain favourable for further advancement over the next two to three days, with the remaining parts of the Northeast and more areas of the country likely to be covered by the southwest monsoon.

The current northern limit of the monsoon passes through Harnai, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Nandyal, Chennai, Kailashahar, Lumding and North Lakhimpur.

Despite the monsoon’s steady progress, widespread seasonal rainfall across Maharashtra may take some more time to materialise. Forecasts from various meteorological models indicate that the state is unlikely to experience uniform monsoon activity immediately.

Weather experts have noted the presence of a cyclonic circulation over the Karnataka coast. The system is expected to strengthen and enhance rainfall activity along the Konkan coast over the next three days. However, parts of western Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to continue witnessing pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity during the same period.
The IMD is closely monitoring the evolving weather situation as farmers and residents await more widespread monsoon rainfall across the state.
