Pune: Flood-Hit Gharkul Residents Block Road in Chikhali over Recurring Waterlogging
Pimpri Chinchwad, 8th July 2026: Residents of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) Gharkul housing project in Chikhali staged a road blockade on Wednesday, protesting recurring flooding in the township after rainwater inundated the premises for the past two days.
The protesters blocked the road connecting Bhakti Shakti Chowk and Khadi Machine Chowk, alleging that despite repeated complaints over the years, the civic body has failed to address the chronic waterlogging problem.
The Gharkul project, developed by the PCMC for economically weaker sections under the Prime Minister’s housing scheme, comprises more than 158 residential buildings. Following incessant rainfall, large parts of the complex remained submerged, forcing residents to wade through waste-deep water to reach their homes.
Residents said floodwater entered the parking levels of most buildings, while in some cases it rose up to the first floor, disrupting daily life and damaging property. They alleged that the locality gets inundated every monsoon, but no permanent solution has been implemented despite repeated representations to the civic administration.
Pimpri Chinchwad has witnessed heavy rainfall over the past three days, triggering widespread flooding across several parts of the city. More than 5,000 people were shifted to relief shelters by the civic body, while over 1,500 residents stranded in floodwaters were rescued using boats.
According to data from the India Meteorological Department’s Chinchwad observatory, the city has received more than 500 mm of rainfall over the last three days.
