Pune FDA Seals Kondhwa’s Irani Tea Café After Expired Food Stock Found During Inspection
Kondhwa, 10th July 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sealed an Irani Tea Café in Kondhwa after an inspection revealed expired food items stored on the premises. The action was initiated following a complaint by Pune-based social activist Nikhil Bhalerao.
According to the complaint, the activist alleged that the café was stocking and serving expired food products, prompting the FDA to conduct a surprise inspection at the establishment.
During the inspection, officials reportedly found several expired food items along with violations of food safety norms. The expired stock was seized, and the café was ordered to shut operations immediately. The establishment has since been sealed pending further action under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Bhalerao welcomed the FDA’s prompt response, stating that the action highlights the importance of citizens reporting suspected violations that could pose a risk to public health.
The FDA has reiterated that food business operators are responsible for ensuring that all food items served to customers are safe for consumption and comply with prescribed food safety standards. Officials also warned that inspections will continue across the city, and strict action will be taken against establishments found violating food safety regulations.
The incident has once again brought attention to the need for regular inspections of food establishments and strict compliance with food safety norms to protect consumers.
