Know Your Doctor: Maharashtra Doctors Must Display QR-Code Plates At Clinics From October
Mumbai, 15th September 2026: Every doctor practising in Maharashtra will now have to display a government-issued QR-code “name plate” at their clinic, hospital or nursing home by the end of October, under a new mandate issued by the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC).
The move is part of the “Know Your Doctor” (KYD) initiative, aimed at helping patients verify a doctor’s identity, registration number, qualifications and licence status by scanning the QR code with a smartphone. The measure is also intended to curb the practice of bogus doctors.
An MMC notice issued on September 9 to registered medical practitioners states that doctors must prominently display a physical KYD plate bearing a unique QR code. The initiative was launched voluntarily in February 2025, but only around 10,000 of the more than 1.4 lakh registered doctors had enrolled. It has now been made mandatory following a government directive issued in November 2025.
MMC administrator Vinky Rughwani said only officially issued physical KYD plates will be accepted. Screenshots or printouts of digital copies will not be valid. Doctors will have to obtain a separate plate for every clinic or hospital where they practise and display it prominently so that patients can easily scan it. Hospitals and nursing homes will also be responsible for ensuring compliance by doctors practising on their premises.
Doctors can apply for KYD plates through the designated portal using their MMC registration number, verify their details, select the number of plates required and pay the applicable fee. Queries can be sent to the KYD support team through its official email.
The MMC will follow a complaint-based enforcement mechanism rather than conducting routine inspection drives. A first violation will attract a warning and 15 days to comply. A second violation will result in a Rs 5,000 fine and another 15 days for compliance. A third violation will attract a Rs 15,000 fine, with seven days to comply.
