Pune, 30 July 2021: A 74-year-old man, Sharad Patil, was suffering from a rare spinal disorder. After becoming bed ridden for almost three months he has started walking now after a surgery performed by doctors at Noble hospital.

Patil was suffering from complete paraplegia for almost three months. He was unable to walk and could not do his daily activities without anybody’s help. He consulted many doctors, but the cause behind his excruciating back pain remained unknown.
He then consulted Dr Vishal Chaudhari at Noble hospital. When he came to the hospital he was not only bed ridden but he had also lost his bladder control. After going through some medical tests he was diagnosed with a rare spinal disorder. Last month, doctors diagnosed him with comprehensive myelomalacia due to calcified flavum at D10/D11 level.
Myelomalacia of the cord occurs in senior citizens due to degeneration of the spine. In Patil’s case it had happened because of degeneration of the spine over time. Doctors mentioned that he was suffering from severe nerve compression in the dorsal spine area.
Dr Vishal Chaudhari,Orthopaedic Spine surgeon from Noble hospital, said, “We performed minimally invasive surgery on Patil. With minimally invasive surgery, we can achieve early recovery, the patient is discharged home early and there is less blood loss during surgery and less chances of infection after operation. When he came to Noble hospital, he was bedridden and was unable to do his daily tasks too. Now, just within one month of surgery he has started walking on his own. He has also gained his bladder control now. We have prescribed him regular physiotherapy along with medicines.”
Doctors mentioned that early diagnosis and treatment is the key for good recovery in any orthopedic issue in senior citizens. “There are many orthopedic diseases that happen because of degeneration of joints, tissues, in senior citizens especially of Spine and Knee joints. The key for good results is early diagnosis. A senior citizen should immediately consult the expert in case of any kind of severe back pain. In case of early diagnosis, one can even recover without surgery.”
