Pune, 17th June 2025: Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad cities are currently undergoing structural audits of all old bridges in the wake of the collapse of a 35-year-old iron pedestrian bridge in Kundmala, Maval Taluka. The bridge, built over the Indrayani River, collapsed recently, resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries.

Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi has announced that similar structural audits will be conducted across the entire district. He has instructed all relevant departments to submit detailed reports on the condition of bridges throughout Pune District. The Kundmala tragedy has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of aging infrastructure in the region.

Speaking to the media, Collector Dudi informed that a six-member committee has been formed under the leadership of Additional Collector Suhas Mapari to investigate the Kundmala incident. The committee has been directed to submit its report within 15 days.

Dudi further stated that in a Disaster Management Authority meeting held in April, the Pune Zilla Parishad, the Public Works Department (PWD), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) were all instructed to conduct structural audits of the bridges under their jurisdiction. Reports have been sought from these agencies, and the administration will closely review them in the coming days. If any bridge is found to be structurally unsafe, it will be demolished immediately to ensure public safety.
