Market Yard, 16th July 2023: The wholesale market in Pune is experiencing a significant surge in prices of essential fruits and vegetables, including garlic, green chillies, peas, and tomatoes. As a result, households are grappling with budget constraints.

In the wholesale market, the price of 10 kilograms of tomatoes ranges from Rs 600 to Rs 900, depending on the grade. Meanwhile, the retail market is witnessing tomato prices exceeding Rs 120 per kilogram.

Today, approximately 90 to 95 truckloads of fruits and vegetables arrived at the Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard in Gultekdi from various states and even foreign countries. This included 6 to 7 tempo loads of green chillies from Gujarat and Karnataka, 3 to 4 tempo loads of cabbage from Gujarat and Karnataka, 200 sacks of peas from Himachal Pradesh, 4 to 5 tempo loads of shevaga from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, 1 tempo load of groundnut pod from Karnataka, and 10 tempo loads of garlic from Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Additionally, 35 truckloads of potatoes arrived from Pune. These numbers were shared by Vilas Bhujbal, the head of the wholesale market.

The market also witnessed the arrival of 700 to 800 sacks of satari ginger from Pune division, 6 to 5000 bags of tomatoes, 8 to 1500 bags of cauliflower, 5 to 10 bags of cabbage, 3 to 4 bags of okra, 3 to 5 bags of guar, 5 bags of cucumber, 8 bags of bell pepper, and 10 bags of red pumpkin. Furthermore, approximately 12 tempos and 55 to 60 trucks of onions were also brought to the market.

Apart from the tomato price surge, the scarcity of leafy vegetables due to rainfall has led to increased prices of coriander and fenugreek (Methi). Traders at the vegetable section of the market revealed that prices of other leafy vegetables have slightly decreased compared to the previous week. The market received around 1.5 lakh bundles of coriander and 35 thousand bundles of fenugreek.

The wholesale market prices for leafy vegetables are as follows: coriander (Rs. 800 to Rs. 2000), fenugreek (Rs. 1200 to Rs. 1800), shepu (Rs. 600 to Rs. 1000), kandapat (Rs. 600 to Rs. 1200), chakwat (Rs. 400 to Rs. 700), kardai (Rs. 300 to Rs. 700), mint (Rs. 200 to Rs. 800), flax (Rs. 400 to Rs. 700), radish (Rs. 800 to Rs. 1500), amaranth (Rs. 400 to Rs. 700), chuka (Rs. 400 to Rs. 800), chavalai (Rs. 300 to Rs. 700), and spinach (Rs. 800 to Rs. 1600), according to traders.

The fluctuating prices in Pune’s wholesale market have put a strain on consumers’ budgets, and the rising cost of essential vegetables and fruits remains a cause for concern.
