Air India Flight 171 Tragedy: Tata Group Announces Rs 1 Crore Compensation and Support for Victims

Mumbai, 12th June 2025: In the wake of the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171, Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed profound grief and announced comprehensive support for the affected families and individuals.

“We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured,” Chandrasekaran said in a statement.
Tata Group has pledged ₹1 crore as compensation to the families of each person who lost their life in the tragedy. Additionally, the group will cover all medical expenses for those injured, ensuring they receive comprehensive care and support. Tata Group also committed to supporting the reconstruction of B J Medical College’s hostel.

“We remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time,” Chandrasekaran added.

A devastating tragedy struck today when Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, en route to London Gatwick Airport. The aircraft, carrying 242 people—230 passengers, including 11 children and 2 infants, and 12 crew members—plummeted into the Meghani Nagar neighborhood, colliding with a hostel building at B J Medical College. The crash, which occurred at 1:38 p.m, resulted in at least 241 fatalities, with one reported survivor, British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.
