Air India Plane Crash Tragedy: All 242 Onboard Killed; Including Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani; DNA Tests Underway For Victim Identification

Ahmedabad, 12th June 2025: In a devastating tragedy, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all 242 people on board. The flight, which had taken off for London’s Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after departure. Officials have confirmed that there are no survivors.
Among those on board was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The passenger manifest included 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian passenger.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner stated grimly that the chances of survival in such a crash were “next to impossible.” So far, over 100 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage. Many of the victims are so severely burned that identification is only possible through DNA testing.
Dhananjay Dwivedi, Principal Secretary of Health, said that arrangements have been made at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for collecting DNA samples from close relatives—parents or children—of the deceased. The testing will be conducted at the Kasoti Bhavan on the ground floor of BJ Medical College, where the hospital’s forensic wing is based.
To assist families and provide updates related to emergency treatment and recovery, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital’s trauma center has issued two contact numbers: 6357373831 and 6357373841
As rescue and recovery operations continue at the crash site, officials have urged families of the victims to cooperate with authorities in the identification process. More updates are expected as the situation develops.
