Pune, 10th October 2022: More than two years after the airport began operating following the initial wave of the epidemic, the Pune airport recorded 170 flight movements on Sunday and three other days in October, reaching pre-Covid levels.

The airport counted 172 aircraft activities on October 9th, 86 departures and the same number of arrivals. The airport noted the same total number of daily flights on October 7th too.

Additionally, the airport noted a total of 170 aircraft movements on October 6th and October 2nd. In Pune, there were generally 170 daily airplane movements prior to the epidemic.

An airport representative said, “The airport has been registering more flights since October, especially on Sundays. The current holiday season is one of the causes of the same. Because more people are travelling, certain airlines have increased their frequencies, mostly to northern places like Delhi but also to some southern cities. By October 15, the airport’s winter schedule should be finalised, and additional flights are likely to be added.”

After the first wave of the pandemic in May 2020, domestic airline operations were resumed nationwide. Since then, the Pune airport has seen an increase in the number of daily flights.

Another airport representative added, “However, different Covid variations like Delta and Omicron have emerged after the initial shutdown, and it has not been an easy ride when it comes to an increase in flight movements. Only recently have pre-pandemic levels been attained. By this year’s Diwali, we anticipate that daily passenger traffic will surpass pre-pandemic levels. We are confident that as more flights and travellers use the airport, which is now open 24 hours a day, both numbers will rise. There have been measures taken to manage the gathering.”

Authorities further stated that airlines were anticipated to make use of the roughly 14 more airport slots recently provided by the defence ministry. The source said that some of these slots have been taken over by airlines and frequencies to some destinations like Delhi have risen due to the Christmas season.

At Pune Airport, there are currently between 21,000 and 24,000 passengers per day, and this number is anticipated to rise. The official stated that the daily traffic was roughly 31,000 before the outbreak.
