Pune, 4th May 2022: Another flyover has been proposed on the same road after the construction of a flyover at Nalstop Chowk to ease the traffic congestion on Karve Road. The Y-shaped flyover between Karishma Chowk and Karve Statue has been opposed by locals. Citizens have taken a stand that there is no need for a new flyover as the flyover at Nalstop Chowk has a picture of high traffic and traffic congestion under the flyover.
The flyover has been planned by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to solve the traffic problem between Karishma Chowk and Karve Statue. The proposed flyover is expected to cost Rs 75 crore and the budget for the current financial year has allocated Rs 15 crore for the flyover.
Opposition to the new flyover has started at a time when the construction of the flyover has begun as the flyover has been proposed in the municipal budget. Citizens started to oppose the flyover stating “No Y-shaped flyover from Paud Phata to Karve Statue.” The Kothrud Citizens’ Association has taken a stand not to aggravate the problems of Kothrudkars by constructing another flyover when the flyover at Nalastop is damaged.
Citizens like Dilip Nagarkar, Santosh Patil, Harshad Abhyankar, Mandar Desai, Jitendra Golsangi, Dr. Shishir Modak, Vasant Bagal, Keshav Lohokare, Jagdish Parikar, Vishwanath Shetty, Ajay Deshpande, Bapu Potdar, Dr. Jayant Monikar, Sunil Unhale, Bhagwat, Kachare, Gangurde have given statements in this regard.
PMC has constructed a two-storey flyover to ease the traffic congestion on Karve Road. However, there is a picture of traffic jam at Nalastop Chowk even after the flyover. High-speed traffic from the flyover and traffic congestion under the flyover is increasing. Some changes will be made on an experimental basis to ease the traffic congestion caused by the city’s first double-deck flyover. Locals have rallied against the new flyover, claiming that the two-story flyover, which was built to ease traffic congestion on Karve Road, had collapsed.
According to the reports, the road is short and there is no intersections anywhere. There is no traffic jam from Mayur Colony to Karisma Chowk. Traffic is smooth even when there are no traffic police. Mayur Colony DP Road is approved in 1987 development plan and it is in final stage. So it is going to be a viable option for Karve Road. Metro line is proposed between Paud Phata to Karve Statue. This will lighten the load. Increased public transport will reduce the use of motorbikes and two-wheelers. Due to the Metro and flyover from Karve Road to Paud Phata, Paud road traffic is 50 per cent divided. As a result, the traffic load reported in 2018 has been greatly reduced. The issue of alternative roads and parking was not properly addressed during the development of Karve Road. But the road doesn’t have a flyover option. The Deccan Gymkhana to Warja can be smoothed out if the traffic is handled efficiently and regulated properly.
The first double-deck flyover in the city, which has been hailed as the first doubke-deck flyover in the city, will now undergo some experimental modifications to ease the congestion caused by the flyover. Accordingly, four-wheelers coming from Mhatre bridge will be banned on Shankarrao Joshi road. Only two-wheelers will be allowed. These vehicles can pass through Abhinav Chowk (Nalstop) on Karve Road or Paud Road. The ST and PMP stop at SNDT is planned to be shifted near Dashbhuja Ganpati Mandir on Karve Road. Rickshaws are banned at a particular stop. If there is a separate lane to reach the flyover at Paud Phata while descending from the flyover, vehicles coming from Nalstop Chowk on Karve Road can go to Swatantryaveer Savarkar Flyover on Paud Road on the left side. Concrete measures will be taken in the next fortnight after the change from the preliminary decisions.
