Assembly Elections 2026: Actor Vijay’s TVK leads in Tamil Nadu debut; BJP storms Bengal, Congress gains in Kerala
Chennai, May 4, 2026: As counting of votes for assembly elections in four states and a Union Territory progressed on Monday, actor Vijay Thalapathy’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), appeared set to make a strong debut, emerging as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu.
According to Election Commission of India trends, TVK was leading in 107 seats, while the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) slipped to third place with leads in 49 seats. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) was ahead in 58 seats. TVK is likely to fall short of the majority mark by around 10 seats and may seek support from smaller parties to form the government.
In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party was headed for a landslide victory, crossing the majority mark on its own. ECI data showed BJP leading in 185 seats, well above the halfway mark of 148, while All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, was ahead in 93 seats.
In Kerala, the Indian National Congress and its allies were set to return to power, dislodging the Left Democratic Front which was in rule. Trends indicated Congress leading in 63 seats, while Communist Party of India (Marxist) was ahead in 25. Allies including the Indian Union Muslim League, leading in 23 seats, were expected to help the coalition cross the majority mark of 71.
In Assam, the BJP had already crossed the majority mark of 64 seats. According to ECI trends, BJP was leading in 79 seats, while Congress trailed with 24.
