Pune 14th Sept 2023: As local leaders in several parts of the city had announced a bandh for today to support the demand for reservation for Maratha community, bandh was observed in some areas. The members of Maratha Kranti Morcha who led during the earlier protest for the community had announced to hold a symbolic protest at the Mahatma Phule Mandai in the city and had not extended their support for the bandh call.
According to reports, the bandh was observed in Baner, Pashan, Susu, Mahalunge, Bopodi, Aundh, Someshwar Wadi and adjoining areas in the city. Majority of the traders from these areas kept their shops closed for a day to support the bandh call. The community members also held protests and hunger strikes at several locations to extend their support to the demand for reservation to the Maratha community in Maharashtra.
Initially, the bandh was called for the whole Pune but several leaders decided against the band claiming that it will have an impact on the traders ahead of festive season. It may be noted that violent protests were reported across the state after lathicharge was reported during a protest for reservation in Jalna district. The hunger strike was started by Manoj Jarange Patil an activist from Jalna district demanding Kunbi certificates for the Maratha community to get reservation. Jarange ended his hunger strike on Thursday after the Chief Minister agreed to most of his demands and visited himself to the protest site to end his protest.
