Pune, 1st October 2025: A senior citizen who lost both his legs in a speeding dumper accident has received relief after the National Insurance Company paid him a compensation of Rs 1 crore through a mediation process in the Pune District Court. The settlement avoided a long legal battle, providing timely financial support to the accident-affected two-wheeler driver.

The incident occurred in April 2019 on the Kamshet-Jawan road, where the senior citizen, a resident of Bibvewadi and earning his livelihood in the agricultural sector, suffered permanent loss of both legs. He had filed a claim with the Motor Accident Tribunal against the dumper owner and the insurance company.

Under the guidance of the Supreme Court, the “Mediation for the Nation” campaign is being implemented nationwide to expedite pending claims. In this case, the Pune Court facilitated mediation, resulting in a swift settlement. Principal District and Sessions Judge Mahendra Mahajan and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority Sonal Patil presented the compensation cheque to the senior citizen.

Advocate Shrikant Kale, representing the victim, said, “Mediation is a scheme in the interest of the parties, and it provides a viable solution within the legal framework. Getting satisfactory compensation gives great relief to the parties.”

Judge J. G. Dorle of the Tribunal referred the matter for mediation, and as per Judge B. D. Kulkarni’s order, Advocate Atul Gunjal was appointed as the expert mediator. Advocate Ramesh Neurgaonkar handled the proceedings on behalf of the insurance company, which ultimately agreed to pay the compensation through mediation.

The successful settlement under the mediation process highlights the effectiveness of the initiative in resolving long-pending claims and providing timely justice to victims.
