Boundary Walls Misused for Urination at Pune Railway Station Parcel Section, DRM Urges PMC Action
Pune, 8th December 2024: The area near the parcel section entrance of Pune Railway Station has become a hotspot for open defecation, creating a foul smell and causing significant inconvenience to passengers. The Railway Department has lodged a formal complaint with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to address the issue.
Reports suggest that many passengers and citizens, particularly while exiting the railway station or heading toward the bus station, resort to open defecation, leading to unhygienic conditions. Following increased complaints from women passengers, Pune Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Indu Dubey inspected the site and urged Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale to take swift corrective measures.
Illegal Stalls Worsen the Problem
The area surrounding the station is bustling with activity at all hours, with numerous stalls selling food, gutkha, and paan lining the boundary walls of the parking lot and parcel section. Dubey noted that many of these stalls remain closed and have become informal urination spots for citizens and passengers. “Complaints from women passengers about the unsanitary conditions have increased significantly,” Dubey stated.
Health and Hygiene Concerns
The presence of illegal stalls and the misuse of boundary walls for urination near the heavily trafficked parcel section entrance has raised health concerns. “The unsanitary conditions and foul smell could pose health risks to passengers,” Dubey warned, adding that PMC has been asked to take immediate action against those responsible.
Availability of Free Toilets
Despite the availability of a free toilet outside the railway station, many individuals continue to use the boundary walls, exacerbating the issue. “Passengers and citizens are urged to use the designated facilities and avoid behavior that could cause embarrassment, particularly for women,” Dubey appealed.
PMC’s Response Pending
When contacted, PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale declined to comment on the matter.
Dubey emphasized the urgency of the issue: “A large number of urinals have been erected along the boundary wall near the parcel section, but passengers and citizens still urinate openly. After complaints from female passengers, I inspected the area and contacted the Municipal Commissioner to initiate immediate action.”
With the situation persisting, commuters and citizens await PMC’s intervention to ensure hygiene and restore the dignity of the station environment.
