New Delhi, 2nd December 2023: As the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) receives numerous requests seeking clarity on the criteria for calculating students’ percentages in the Board’s examinations, a recent communication sheds light on the process.

The sub-section 40.1 (iii) of Chapter 7 of the Examination Bye-Laws explicitly states that “No overall division/distinction/aggregate shall be awarded.” Additionally, in cases where a candidate has presented more than 5 subjects, the decision to determine the best 5 subjects may be left to the discretion of the admitting institution or employer.

The key information dispels any misconception that the Board itself calculates, declares, or informs the percentage of marks. Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, the Controller of Examinations, emphasized that if there is a need for percentage information—whether for higher education or employment—the calculation should be performed by the admitting institution or employer.
