celebrates World Environment Day by providing clean cooking fuel at adopted village Tembha
Mumbai/ Shahpur, June 4, 2019: On this World Environment Day, Mahindra Logistics Ltd. (MLL) has taken an initiative to provide LPG cylinders to the families in Thakurpada and Bhospada of Tembha village near Shahpur, Maharasthra. Mahindra Logistics has adopted village Tembha and is conducting various developmental initiatives including infrastructure development, education, health and vocational guidance for its residents over the years.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), MLL has already processed 102 applications for LPG connections so far and 54 more are underway. These residents have been using firewood for cooking, which is not only harmful for the environment, but also affects their health. MLL took this initiative and are creating awareness about the scheme and also about the larger benefit of safe cooking options in the house. Currently, the company is targeting two hamlets of Tembha – Thakurpada and Bhospada and soon will target the rest of the village.
India is home to more than 24 Crore households out of which about 10 Crore households are still deprived of LPG as cooking fuel and have to rely on firewood, coal, dung – cakes etc. as primary source of cooking, as per the website of PMUY. The smoke from burning such fuels causes alarming household pollution and adversely affects the health of Women & children causing several respiratory diseases/ disorders. As per a WHO report, smoke inhaled by women from unclean fuel is equivalent to burning 400 cigarettes in an hour. In addition, women and children have to go through the drudgery of collecting firewood.
Mr. Pirojshaw Sarkari, CEO, Mahindra Logistics Ltd., “We at Mahindra Logistics strongly believe inwomen safety and empowerment. Through this initiative, we aim to safeguard the health of women & children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel. With its use, they no longer have to compromise their health in smoky kitchens or wander in unsafe locations to collect firewood. Under this initiative, we aim to provide maximum LPG connections in FY20 and not only empower these women but transform their lives towards a healthy and pollution free environment.”
