Mumbai, 29th May 2023: With the monsoon season approaching, the Central Railway (CR) is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety and smooth operation of train services. Special attention is being given to the Vande Bharat trains and mail and express trains that traverse the ghat sections known for heavy rainfall and landslides during this time of the year.

Senior railway officials have revealed that extensive efforts are being made by all departments to minimize disruptions caused by the monsoon. The Karjat-Lonavla ghat section and the Kasara-Igatpuri ghat section, which are prone to landslides, have undergone significant infrastructure upgrades. Rock barriers have been installed along a 300-meter stretch, and measures like boulder netting, Canadian fencing, and bank stabilization have been completed to enhance safety. The memory of major landslides in the Lonavla ghat section last year serves as a reminder of the importance of these precautionary measures.

One of the crucial steps taken involves identifying high-risk spots within tunnels. A total of 18 locations have been identified, and tunnel sounding operations have been carried out to mitigate the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. Additional pumps have been installed to tackle any potential flooding inside the tunnels.

To enhance monitoring and response capabilities, CCTV cameras and telephones are being installed at 31 static watchmen huts. Moreover, thermographic checking of Overhead Equipment (OHE) wires along a 1239-kilometer span of the track has been completed, ensuring the safety and stability of the electrical infrastructure.

The CR Control Office will maintain close coordination with the meteorological department, the disaster management cell, and staff stationed in flood-prone areas. This will enable real-time updates and swift response to any weather-related incidents or emergencies.

These comprehensive preventive measures adopted by the Central Railway demonstrate their proactive approach towards ensuring passenger safety and the smooth functioning of train services during the challenging monsoon season.

Passengers can now travel with greater peace of mind, knowing that the railway authorities are committed to providing a safe and reliable journey even in the face of adverse weather conditions. The proactive measures taken by CR are a testament to their dedication to passenger welfare and operational excellence.
