Centre Considering Increased Ethanol Mix in Petrol, Says Nitin Gadkari in Pune
Pune, 1st June 2026: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has said that the Centre is considering increasing the proportion of ethanol blended with petrol to meet the country’s growing fuel demand and reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
Speaking at the ‘Sugar and Bioenergy’ conference organised by the West Indian Sugar Mills Association (WISMA) in Pune, Gadkari said discussions are underway with oil marketing companies and automobile manufacturers on increasing ethanol blending. He expressed confidence that a positive decision would be taken soon.
Highlighting the importance of rural development, Gadkari said strengthening the rural economy is essential for making India economically stronger. He stressed the need to develop “smart villages” alongside smart cities, noting that the lack of opportunities in rural areas has led to large-scale migration to urban centres, putting additional pressure on cities.
“The number of vehicles has increased significantly in recent years, leading to higher fuel consumption. Ethanol blending is an effective solution, and efforts are being made to further increase its share in petrol,” he said.
Gadkari also urged the sugar industry to focus on producing value-added by-products rather than relying solely on sugar production. He said reducing imports and increasing exports is crucial for strengthening the nation’s economy.
Addressing farmers, the minister advised them to select crops based on market demand and sustainability. He also advocated the production and use of organic fertilisers to protect soil health and promote sustainable agriculture.
The conference was attended by Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde, Cooperation Minister Babasaheb Patil, former minister Dilip Walse Patil, MP Bajrang Sonawane, Sugar Commissioner Dr Sanjay Kolte, WISMA President B.B. Thombre, and other industry representatives.
During the event, awards were presented to sugar factories and officials for their contributions to the sugar and bioenergy sectors.
