Chaos at Delhi Airport as Over 80 Air India Express Passengers Arrive Without Baggage
New Delhi, May 25: Massive chaos and frustration erupted at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday after more than 80 passengers travelling from Dammam on Air India Express flight IX 174 reportedly arrived without their checked-in baggage.
According to passengers, the flight landed safely in Delhi, but upon reaching the baggage claim area, travelers were shocked to discover that none of their luggage had arrived on the conveyor belts. What initially appeared to be a minor delay soon turned into hours of confusion and anger as passengers waited for more than three hours without receiving any proper explanation from airline authorities.
Eyewitnesses at the airport described scenes of panic and outrage, with exhausted passengers crowding airline counters and demanding immediate answers from ground staff. Several passengers were seen arguing with officials over the absence of communication and the lack of clarity regarding the whereabouts of their bags.
Many of the affected travelers included families, elderly passengers, and workers returning from Saudi Arabia after long journeys. Passengers claimed they were left stranded without access to essential belongings such as medicines, important documents, clothes, electronic devices, and personal valuables packed inside their luggage.
The situation reportedly worsened due to poor coordination and inadequate support from airport and airline authorities. Travelers alleged that airline representatives failed to provide timely updates or a clear timeline for baggage delivery, further increasing tension inside the terminal.
Several passengers also claimed they missed connecting domestic flights and important personal commitments because of the prolonged wait at the airport. Some travelers said they were forced to remain inside the baggage claim area late into the evening with little assistance.
“We have been standing here for hours and nobody is giving us proper information. Our luggage contains important items and medicines. This is completely unacceptable,” one passenger said while speaking to fellow travelers at the airport.
Another passenger alleged that airline staff appeared unprepared to handle the crisis and were unable to answer basic questions regarding whether the baggage had been left behind in Dammam or delayed in transit.
As frustration mounted, passengers demanded immediate intervention from senior airport authorities and called on Air India Express to ensure swift tracing and delivery of the missing baggage. Many also demanded compensation for the inconvenience, mental stress, and financial losses caused due to the delay.
As of the latest reports, Air India Express had not issued any detailed public statement regarding the incident. However, airline officials at the airport were reportedly collecting passenger details and baggage claim information to begin the process of tracing the missing luggage.
The incident once again raises serious concerns regarding baggage handling efficiency, passenger communication systems, and crisis management protocols at major Indian airports and airlines.
