Pune, 6th March 2023: All non-agricultural public universities in Maharashtra have been instructed by the Higher and Technical Education Department to conduct mandatory National Accreditation and Assessment Committee (NAAC) evaluations, re-evaluations, and grading for aided and unaided colleges under their jurisdiction.

The colleges that fail to comply with the deadline of March 31, 2023, will not be permitted to admit new students from the upcoming academic year. There are 1777 aided colleges, 2141 permanently unaided colleges, and 28 government colleges in Maharashtra. Only 138 permanently unaided colleges have completed the NAAC process. The remaining 2003 colleges either have inactive status or are not NAAC compliant, leading to the issuance of this order.

The NAAC evaluation, re-evaluation, and grading have been mandated for providing quality education to students in compliance with the New National Education Policy. The DHE has come forward to conduct academic and administrative audits, welcomed by the university and college managements as it will help improve academic and administrative fulfillment.

The non-compliance with the NAAC process affects salary and non-salary grant allocation, as well as the distribution of funds from central and state governments.
