Delhi Riots: What Are The Charges Against Umar Khalid?

Delhi, September 14, 2020: Umar Khalid, an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), was arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police last night in the Delhi riots case. The police had summoned Umar for questioning. He was arrested after interrogation at the Special Cell office.

Delhi Police had registered an FIR against Umar Khalid on 6 March 2020. The charges include mobilizing people, inciting riots, the conspiracy of riots, making inflammatory speeches, inciting people to violence on the street during US President Donald Trump’s visit.

Umar Khalid, arrested under the UAPA Act, was also mentioned by the Delhi Police in its additional charge sheet presented in the court on violence. He was also named by three female members of ‘Pinjra Tod’ movement.

According to the police, Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal and Gulfisha Fatima, were allegedly instigated by Umar Khalid for the riots and mobilized the mob. Following this statement, cops summoned Umar for questioning over the Delhi violence and later he was arrested immediately.

Earlier Delhi Police had mentioned the names of Sitaram Yechury (CPI(M) General Secretary), Yogendra Yadav (Swaraj Abhiyan chief), Amanatullah Khan (MLA of Aam Aadmi Party), Chandrashekhar (Bhim Army chief) and Apoorvanand (Delhi University professor). However, when there were no solid proofs, the Delhi Police clarified that they are not accused in the riots case and only their names are mentioned in the statement of other persons.
