Digital Locker Expands To Include Passports: Ministry In Talks For Integration

Pune, 13th June 2023: The Digital Locker, a key component of the Digital India initiative, has revolutionized the way citizens safeguard their important documents. This user-friendly platform enables individuals to securely store and access various documents such as Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, vehicle licenses, identity and resident certificates, educational certificates, and now even passports. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is currently engaged in discussions with relevant ministries to incorporate passports into the Digital Locker, with ongoing technological advancements in progress.

Highlighting the significance of digital advancements, the third digital economy working group meeting under the ‘G-20’ took place in Pune yesterday. Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, inaugurated the event along with the opening of the ‘Global DPI’ exhibition. Distinguished attendees included Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary of the Electronics and Information Technology Department, representatives from various countries, Pune Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao, Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh, and others. Notably, Memorandums of Understanding were signed with Armenia, Suriname, and Sierra Leone during the event.

The Digi Locker service, launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology as part of the digital initiative, addresses the concerns of document damage or loss. By providing a secure ‘Two-Step Authentication’ facility, Digi Locker ensures the safety and accessibility of important documents.

During the G-20 exhibition, representatives from different countries expressed interest in the Digi Locker service. Notably, delegates from Trinidad and Tobago engaged in discussions to explore the features and potential implementation of this technology. Countries interested in adopting the digital locker system will receive support and technology transfer to facilitate seamless implementation. The responsible authorities have expressed their commitment to assisting interested nations in adopting this state-of-the-art technology.

Currently, the Digi Locker platform boasts an impressive user base of 17 crore individuals and encompasses partnerships with 2,311 entities, offering a wide range of services to cater to diverse user requirements.
