Diwali Rush Overflows Lonavala-Khandala; Tourists Face Traffic Snarls on Old Pune-Mumbai Highway

Lonavala, 17th November 2023: As Diwali festivities unfold, hotels and resorts in Lonavala-Khandala are witnessing a full house, attracting a surge of tourists. However, the heavy influx has led to traffic jams on the old Pune-Mumbai highway in Lonavala, causing delays for Pune-bound traffic at Bhor Ghat.

With Diwali holidays coinciding with the weekend, a substantial number of tourists have flocked to Lonavala and Khandala. These scenic locations, known for their natural beauty, have become popular attractions for tourists during the festive season. Tourist hotspots like Lonavala, Khandala, Bhushi Dam, Rajmachi, Lohagad Fort, Ekvira Devi Temple, Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves area, and Pawna Lake area in Maval are experiencing a considerable influx of visitors.

The appeal of Lonavala and Khandala extends to tourists from Gujarat and Mumbai, making these destinations bustling with activity. Points of interest such as Lion’s Point, Rajmachi Garden in Khandala, and Sunset Point are particularly popular. Many tourists have made reservations in hotels, resorts, and even private bungalows.

The surge in tourism during the Diwali holidays has generated excitement among local businesses. Despite the festive season, some businesses are making efforts to attract tourists by periodically adjusting rates. Hotelier Anish Ganatra emphasized the need for occasional rate reductions to maintain a steady flow of visitors.

On Friday, the Pune-Mumbai highway in Lonavala witnessed long queues of vehicles, especially tourist vehicles, causing delays. Traffic congestion was notable between Apollo Garage and Kiran Petrol Pump, while at Bhor Ghat, traffic heading towards Pune moved slowly near Amrutanjan Bridge on the expressway. The festive fervour, coupled with the weekend and Diwali holidays, has transformed Lonavala-Khandala into a vibrant and lively tourist destination.
