Doctor Revives Army Personnel After Mid-Air Cardiac Arrest on Delhi-Bound Flight
Siliguri, 9th February 2026: A Delhi-bound Akasa Air flight turned into the scene of a life-saving medical emergency when a doctor from Gangtok, assisted by two other medical professionals, successfully revived an Indian Army serviceman who suffered a cardiac arrest mid-flight.
The incident took place aboard Flight QP1807 operating from Bagdogra to Delhi. During the journey, a passenger, later identified as a serving Army personnel, suddenly collapsed and became unresponsive. Initial checks revealed no detectable pulse or blood pressure, signalling a severe cardiac emergency at cruising altitude.
Responding swiftly to an announcement from the cabin crew, Dr. Uttam Kharka, Chief Consultant Gynaecologist at STNM Hospital in Gangtok, stepped forward to help. He was joined by an ophthalmic surgeon and a nursing professional from Karnataka who were also travelling on the flight. The three medical responders quickly assessed the situation and shifted the patient to a more accessible space near the cockpit to begin treatment.
Despite the constraints of the aircraft cabin, the team initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), administered oxygen support, and began intravenous fluid therapy. Adrenaline was also given in an effort to restore cardiac function. The doctors continued resuscitation efforts for nearly 15 to 20 minutes.
Their sustained intervention proved effective as the jawan gradually regained consciousness. Sorbitrate was administered under the tongue to support cardiac circulation following revival.
The flight crew then coordinated an emergency diversion to Varanasi Airport, while ground medical teams were alerted in advance. Upon landing, the serviceman was immediately transferred for further treatment. Officials said he was conscious and in stable condition at the time of handover.
Later, speaking about the incident, Dr. Kharka said he was grateful for the opportunity to assist during the crisis. He noted that timely action and teamwork helped save the life of a fellow citizen and serving soldier, adding that the experience reaffirmed his belief that a doctor’s duty extends beyond hospital walls.
The episode highlights the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies and underscores the critical role of trained professionals, even in non-clinical settings. It also reflects the enduring commitment of the medical community to preserving life — wherever the need arises, even at 30,000 feet above ground.
