Doctors at Aditya Birla Hospital treat a rare case of 1.5kg breast lump in 65-year-old lady

12 DEC 2018 : Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, Pune, Maharashtra’s first Joint Commission International(JCI), USA and NABH accredited Hospital, successfully treated a rare case of 1.5kg lump in the breast of a 65 year old lady.

65-year-old Archana (name changed) from Solapur visited Aditya Birla Hospital’s Breast OPD with complaint of sudden increase in the size of lump in left breast. She was examined by Dr. Deepali Gonajrewho on examination, advised her for an immediate Ultrasound of breast, which suggested of vascular pathology – a disease related to blood vessels. Decision of urgent CT Angio was taken.

“The CT Angio revealed a hemorrhagic cyst (when bleeding occurs within the cyst) with branch of int mammary supplying wall of the lesion. The cyst was considerably of a big size 18 x 10 x 10 cm. The case was very complicated and rare as the lady was having dextrocardia (heart being on the right side of the chest wall) and she was also a patient of Diabetes, hypertension and due to heart disease was on blood thinners”, shared Dr. Deepali Gonjari – Consultant Breast Oncosurgeon, Aditya Birla Hospital.

Decision of urgent exploration was taken. Team of doctor’s lead by Dr. Deepali Gonjari – Consultant Breast Oncosurgeon, Dr. Samith Chahuta – Consultant Cardiovascular, Dr. Neve – Consultant Onco Surgeon performed the surgery where Cyst excision was done in Toto. The cyst was of more than 1.5kg. Branch of internal mammary artery was identified and secured. The patient responded well to the surgery.

“The cyst would have busted and affected the surrounding area including the heart, which would have been fatal. Immediate intervention and surgery helped us save her life”, further informed Dr. Deepali Gonjari – Consultant Breast Oncosurgeon.
