DRONE TECHNOLOGY: EMERGING TRENDS AND COUNTER MEASURES SEMINAR AT MILITARY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, PUNE

Pune, 16th January 2023: Drones have revolutionized the way modern militaries conduct warfare, allowing them to strike targets with precision and minimal risk to personnel. Recent conflicts in Ukraine, Nagorno Karabakh, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen, Libya, UAE, South China Sea, Taiwan have seen that drones can be equipped with a variety of payloads, including missiles, bombs, and other explosives, making them formidable weapons. One of the main advantages of drones is their ability to operate in areas that may be too dangerous for manned aircraft. Drones are being used for a wide range of missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition, and strike operations. The ability of drones to operate in hostile environments has made them an indispensable tool for militaries around the world.

Drones have also been used to provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief in areas that may be difficult to access by traditional means. Drones offer immense value addition and savings in fields like construction, agriculture, logistics, surveillance and security. Recent policies issued by DGCA and the Drone (Amendment) Rules, 2022 formalised on 15 Feb 22 have provided much needed impetus to Indian industry to compete with countries like US, Israel, Turkey etc in this field.

Considering the immense relevance of this subject for Indian Military and Industry, a technical seminar on ‘Drone Technology: Emerging Trends and Counter Measures’ is being conducted at MILIT Pune with active participation from services, academia and industries. As part of the Raising Day celebrations, MILIT is set to celebrate its 11th Raising Day on 19 Jan 23 with Air Vice Marshal V Rajasekhar at helm. MILIT with motto ‘Victory through Technology’ Air Marshal BR Krishna PVSM, AVSM, SC, ADC, CISC, HQ IDS will be the chief guest and deliver the keynote address. As part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, a large number of Indian firms line Sagar Defence, Endura Air, Paras Aerospace, Droneacharya, Big Bang Boom, Gurutva Systems, Ayaan Aerospace, Hawking Defence etc are participating in the event. Military Maintenance establishments like 9 Base Repair Depot also would be showcasing their prowess in this field during the seminar.

MILIT traces its roots to ‘Institute of Armament Studies’ which was set up in ‘College of Military Engineering’ in early 50s. In 1967, the Institute moved to the picturesque locale of Girinagar. From its limited scope of Armament Studies, the role of the Institute was considerably enhanced by the Defence R&D council in 1964 and further in 1981. In order to meet the specific and futuristic training requirements of the Armed Forces, MILIT was raised on 19 Jan 12 and subsequently, MILIT emerged as independent tri-services Armed Forces Technical Training Institute under Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS).

The seminar is structured to be a part of the prestigious ‘Capsule on Science, Technology and Applied Research (CAPSTAR)’ being conducted at MILIT from 18-20 Jan 23. Lt Gen Ajai Kumar Singh, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, GOC-in-C, Southern Command will be inaugurating the Capsule on 18 Jan 23. The capsule is being attended by the senior officers of the rank of Brig & equivalent from all there services.”
