Sangli, 3rd February 2026: Celebrations at the Krishnamai Mahotsav took a violent turn on Sunday evening when a speeding SUV allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol crashed into a crowded stretch near Tilak Road, leaving multiple people injured and triggering a furious reaction from bystanders.
The incident occurred close to the Ganpati Temple area, where devotees had gathered in large numbers for the festival. Police sources said the vehicle initially hit parked cars before veering toward pedestrians, causing chaos in the densely packed zone.
Around 15-16 individuals were reported injured, including police personnel deployed for festival security. Civilians hurt in the crash included both adults and children, with some sustaining fractures and other serious injuries. All victims were taken to nearby hospitals, and officials stated that their condition is currently stable.
Eyewitnesses said that enraged members of the public stopped the vehicle immediately after the crash and dragged the driver out. He was allegedly beaten by the crowd before police intervened. The SUV was also damaged during the confrontation.
The driver, identified as a local resident, suffered injuries in the assault and is undergoing treatment under police watch. Authorities have registered a case and said further legal steps will follow after medical and forensic examinations are completed.
