Pune, 11th February 2024: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is set to conduct the PhD Pre-Entrance Examination in April, offering a significant opportunity for students aspiring to pursue doctoral studies. In the coming days, online applications will be invited for the available seats for admission to the PhD course, marking a crucial step in the admission process.

The university, following guidelines from the University Grants Commission (UGC), has formulated new regulations for Ph.D. admissions. However, these regulations have sparked opposition from professors affiliated with colleges under the university. Under the new regulations, only professors from colleges equipped with PhD research centres and teaching postgraduate courses will be eligible to guide students in future research endeavours. This stipulation is expected to lead to a reduction in the number of available PhD guides, raising concerns among stakeholders.

The pre-admission test for Ph.D. admission is known as the Ph.D. Admission CET will be conducted by SPPU to assess candidates’ suitability for the program. The examination will cover various topics, the details of which will be finalized during an upcoming meeting dedicated to PhD admission. The examination process will be tailored to accommodate the availability of seats with PhD guides, ensuring a streamlined admission process.

Several meetings have been convened by the university to deliberate on PhD admission procedures. During one such meeting, it was confirmed that the examination would take place in April, with tentative plans suggesting the second week of the month for the pre-Ph.D. entrance exam. An official announcement regarding the examination schedule is expected from the university shortly.

In addition to the PhD pre-entrance examination, the university will also conduct the SET examination for the qualification of assistant professor on

April 7th.
