Pune, 19th May 2023: Two out of four power lines belonging to the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), running from Shikrapur to Talegaon at 400 KV, experienced a sudden technical failure on Thursday evening (18th May) at 7.10 pm.

This led to an interruption in the electricity supply for approximately 3.55 lakh customers in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and Chakan MIDC. The repair work on these high-voltage lines was successfully completed on Friday (19th May) between 1 am and 8.55 am, resulting in a phased restoration of power supply to all consumers.

During this technical failure, the MahaTransco extra high-pressure substation had to be shut down, rendering load management impossible. As a result, certain areas including Kothrud, SNDT, Aundh, Baner, Shivajinagar, Balewadi, Bavdhan, Model Colony, Pashan, experienced a one-hour power cut between 10 pm and 3 am on Thursday.

It was discovered that one of the high-pressure pipes broke and fell onto another pipe near Karanjavihere village near Talegaon, causing the failure. Following this incident, engineers and employees from Adani Company and MahaTransco collaborated to expedite the repair work on the power lines.

The technical failure resulted in the cessation of 396 MW of electricity, impacting the power supply to 3.55 lakh customers in Pune, including Kharadi, Wadgaon Sheri, Vimannagar, Yerwada, Dhanori, as well as areas like Pimpri village, Chinchwad, Punawale, Valhekarwadi, Wakad, Tathawade, Kiwale, Ravet, Thergaon, and 50% of Akurdi. Additionally, approximately 5,000 industrial customers in Chakan MIDC experienced a halt in their power supply.

MahaTransco and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co Ltd (MSEDCL) worked in close coordination to address the situation. Despite the challenges posed by the increased electricity demand during summer and the transmission loss of 396 MW due to the technical failure, efforts were made to provide relief to electricity consumers through load management.

Gradual restoration of power supply commenced around midnight as MahaTransco and MSEDCL sub-centers began functioning. By 8.55 am on the same day, power supply had been fully restored to all affected customers.
