Mumbai, 5th July 2021: Activist Father Stan Swamy passed away today. He was 84 years old and the cause of his death is said to be cardiac arrest around 1.30 pm. His death was informed to the Bombay High Court by the hospital.

A tribal rights activist, Swamy worked for over five decades in Jharkhand, fighting for the rights of the adivasi community.

He was lodged in Taloja Central Jail. He was constantly complaining about poor health facilities. Only after this, on 29 May, he was admitted to the Holy Family Hospital on the instructions of the Bombay High Court.

Swami recently recovered from Covid-19. But after that, his condition continued to deteriorate. He was also kept on the ventilator at Holy Family Hospital in Bandra. Swamy had filed an appeal in the High Court only last week. In this, he challenged Section 43D-5 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). At the same time, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had also issued a notice to the Maharashtra government on Sunday.

Significantly, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested Swamy in October 2020. He had given a speech at the Elgaar Parishad program in Pune on 31 December 2017. Based on these, a case was registered against Swamy and others. Significantly, a day after this program, there was huge violence in Bhima Koregaon.
