Pune, 7th January 2025: Amid reports of a rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in China, cases are also emerging in India. Last year, 172 HMPV cases were reported across the country, though no fatalities were recorded, according to health experts.

Despite its intimidating name, HMPV is a mild virus that has been recognized by the medical community for over two decades.

Dr. Pradeep Awate, former Epidemiological Survey Officer of Maharashtra, shared insights about the virus: “Metapneumovirus is not a new discovery—it has been known to the medical world for 20 to 25 years. Last year, 172 cases were identified in India through laboratory testing. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported, as this virus typically causes mild symptoms such as cold and cough,” Dr. Awate explained.

He further clarified that HMPV is among the numerous viruses contributing to seasonal colds and respiratory infections, particularly during winter and early summer. Vulnerable groups, such as children under five and elderly individuals with low immunity, may experience more severe symptoms, though these cases are rare.

“There’s no reason to panic,” Dr. Awate reassured. “HMPV does not require specific medication and can be treated effectively with home care. Simple measures like adequate rest, hydration, and a healthy diet are usually sufficient for recovery.”

While there is no vaccine for HMPV, Dr. Awate emphasized preventive steps:

Frequent handwashing
Wearing masks in case of cold or cough symptoms
Avoiding crowded places
Maintaining good hygiene and nutrition
“The virus may have a complex name, but it’s a simple one to manage,” Dr. Awate added.
