Farmers Concerned As Pune Faces 17% Rainfall Deficit In September

Pune, 7th September 2023: The prolonged dry spell in Pune has exacerbated the city’s rainfall deficit, sparking concerns among farmers in the district. As of today, the total rainfall for the season stands at 308 mm, significantly below the monthly average of 492 mm. This deficit amounts to 184 mm, marking a 17 percent shortfall for the month.

The dry spell initially took hold in August and has persisted to date, primarily affecting the non-hilly areas of the district. Most of the limited rainfall has been concentrated in the hilly regions, leaving the remaining parts grappling with a more pronounced deficit. Farmers, in particular, are growing increasingly anxious about the impact on their crops.

However, there is some hope on the horizon as the meteorological office predicts the imminent reactivation of the monsoon. This forecast follows the formation of a low-pressure area (LPA) in the Bay of Bengal and the subsequent development of cloudy weather in the city and surrounding areas. The met office anticipates light to moderate showers in select regions.

In the broader state weather scenario, the LPA in the Bay of Bengal has receded, but another weather disturbance is brewing at an altitude of 7.6 km over Odisha and its vicinity. The monsoon LPA has shifted southward from its usual position and now extends from Bikaner, Guna, Mandla, Raipur, Kalingapattanam to the east-central Bay of Bengal.

Anticipated heavy rainfall is expected in several districts, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Akola, Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, and Chandrapur. Meanwhile, the met office forecasts light to moderate rainfall for the remaining parts of the state.

While the rainfall deficit has posed challenges for Pune and its neighboring districts, the anticipated monsoon revival offers hope for a more balanced and favorable climate in the coming days.
