Pune, 8th August 2025: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday announced that the Maharashtra government will soon approve the establishment of five new police stations in Pune city, along with 1,000 additional personnel to strengthen law and order. The proposed police stations will be located in Lohgaon, Laxmi Nagar, Narhe, Manjari, and Yewalewadi.

Speaking at the inauguration of various projects and initiatives of the Pune City Police Commissionerate at Shivajinagar Police Headquarters, Fadnavis said the expansion is part of a major restructuring of the state police system — the first in 60 years. This includes new police station formats, narcotics units, and forensic divisions.

“Cities are expanding and so are the challenges of law and order. The government is committed to modernizing the police force. Pune will also get two new Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP) in the near future,” he said, adding that this is the first time in Maharashtra that seven police stations have been sanctioned for a city in a single phase.

Modern Technology for Policing
Fadnavis inaugurated the ‘Drishti’ Integrated Command and Control Center, calling it the country’s most advanced CCTV-based policing system. Equipped with artificial intelligence, the system will help track criminals in real-time, improve traffic management, and enhance crowd control through a public address system.

Five modern control vehicles, each equipped with drones and connected to the central control room, have also been deployed. “These vehicles will function like mini commissionerates when required,” he said.

To improve surveillance, the government has sanctioned a Rs 450 crore project for 2,800 cameras across the city, and an Rs 80 crore CCTV network to monitor 22 hilltops and ghats, starting with Bopdev Ghat. Any camera outages will be reported instantly to the control room and fixed within 24 hours.

Traffic Solutions Using Satellites
Highlighting Pune’s traffic issues, Fadnavis announced plans for an Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) using satellite technology and AI. Traffic signals will be connected to the system, enabling faster travel times and diversion of vehicles to alternate routes. The 10-year traffic plan for Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and PMRDA areas will be opened for public suggestions before finalisation.

Tough Stand on Drugs
Fadnavis praised Pune Police for their work in tackling drug abuse but stressed the need for a larger anti-drug campaign. He also lauded the force’s initiative to rehabilitate children caught in legal troubles.

Ajit Pawar Assures Support
Deputy Chief Minister and Pune District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar said the state government has reserved 5% of the district annual plan budget — Rs 1,100 crore — for the police force. Of this, Rs 40 crore has been allocated in the past two years for Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and rural areas.

Pawar urged the police to ensure justice for citizens visiting police stations and appealed for public cooperation in maintaining law and order, especially during the upcoming festive season. He also said the Bundgarden police station should be relocated to ease congestion in the collectorate area.

Projects Worth Rs 1,000 Crore Approved
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the government has approved projects worth Rs 1,000 crore in the past three years for Pune City Police. These include 816 additional personnel, 150 new vehicles, and Rs 200 crore for a new Commissionerate building.

The event was attended by senior state officials, including DGP Rashmi Shukla, Home Department Additional Chief Secretary Iqbal Singh Chahal, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, and others.

In a touching moment, Fadnavis felicitated police personnel who rescued two-year-old Komal Kale from Dharashiv after reviewing footage from 200 CCTV cameras. Women present at the event tied rakhis to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.
