Pune, 17th March 2026: The state government’s decision to provide 100 per cent free education to girls in professional courses is facing criticism, as private colleges continue to charge additional fees from students despite the scheme.

While the government is paying the tuition fees, many colleges are allegedly collecting money under various heads such as laboratory, library, gymkhana and development charges. Parents have raised concerns that this defeats the purpose of the scheme, which is meant to support girls’ education.

Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil had earlier warned that strict action, including cancellation of recognition, would be taken against colleges charging excess fees. However, parents claim that no concrete action has been taken so far.

Several complaints have reportedly been filed, but enforcement remains weak. In some cases, students are being asked to pay extra fees during admission, while others are allegedly denied exam forms if they fail to pay.

The issue was also raised in the state legislature by MLA Rais Shaikh, prompting the government to reiterate that all additional charges will be brought under the Fee Regulatory Authority. However, similar assurances have been made in the past without visible results.

Parents have accused the government of failing to curb the alleged exploitation by private institutions. They say the scheme will remain ineffective unless strict action is taken against erring colleges and clear regulations are enforced.
