Narayan Peth, 4th September 2025: Garud Ganpati Mandal has recreated the grandeur of Odisha’s Konark Sun Temple, one of India’s most iconic heritage monuments, as this year’s Ganeshotsav theme. The 13th-century masterpiece, often called the “Black Pagoda,” is celebrated for its stunning architecture and scientific vision.

The Mandal’s pandal showcases striking details that echo the original structure. At the entrance, two lion statues welcome devotees, while the intricately crafted 24 wheels (Chakras)—symbolizing time and astronomical precision—stand as reminders of India’s advanced knowledge systems. The replica underlines how the Konark Sun Temple, built around 1250 CE, continues to inspire awe more than seven centuries later.

Explaining the concept, Sunil Kunjir, President of Garud Ganpati Mandal, said:
“This year our theme is the Konark Sun Temple of Odisha, which we have presented in a smaller form. This temple is not only a place of worship but also a masterpiece of scientific vision. From the front gate, you can see two lion statues, and on the walls, 24 Chakras—each a symbol of India’s historical knowledge and development. Our aim is to showcase this history, as no other Mandal has attempted such a concept. Through this theme, we want people to realize how rich and advanced our heritage truly is.”

The Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was originally conceived as a colossal chariot dedicated to Surya, the Sun God. It featured 24 intricately carved wheels and seven horses, blending art, spirituality, and astronomical precision.

By recreating this monument, Garud Ganpati Mandal offers not just a devotional experience but also an educational journey, reminding citizens of India’s cultural depth and architectural brilliance.
