Pune, 15th February 2025: The number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has been rising, with over 200 suspected cases reported so far and eight confirmed deaths. Initially, it was believed that contaminated well water in Nanded village was responsible for the outbreak. However, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has made a significant statement, suggesting that the consumption of undercooked chicken meat may be the actual cause.

Speaking at a press conference during the Pune Municipal Corporation’s 75th anniversary event, Pawar stated, “When cases started increasing in the Khadakwasla area, we initially suspected water contamination. However, some reports indicate that the disease might have spread due to the consumption of undercooked chicken. Investigations have been conducted, and there is no need to cull chickens. Instead, people should ensure that the meat is fully cooked before consumption.”

He further reassured the public that the situation is under control and urged citizens not to panic.

During the press conference, Pawar also addressed political matters, dismissing rumors of a cold war between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. “These claims are false. Neither Fadnavis nor Shinde have mentioned any such issue. Everything is running smoothly, and we are working towards the welfare of the state,” he said.

When asked about Eknath Shinde’s recent warning in Nashik—”Do not take me lightly”—Pawar clarified that the statement was directed towards Shinde’s party leaders.

Additionally, he responded to speculation surrounding MLA Suresh Dhas’ meeting with Minister Dhananjay Munde, saying, “Munde is a minister, and Dhas is an MLA. They have known each other for years, and there is no need to read too much into this meeting.”

Commenting on the Santosh Deshmukh family case, Pawar acknowledged the family’s concerns and assured them of a thorough investigation. “The probe is ongoing, and no one guilty will be spared. We are also concerned that one of the accused is still absconding despite 60 days having passed,” he stated.

Regarding Minister Dhananjay Munde’s resignation demands, Pawar reiterated that the government would not protect anyone found guilty. “Action will be taken as per the law,” he asserted.

With GBS cases under watch and political tensions rising, the coming days will be crucial for the state’s health and governance.
